Swansea Model Yacht Club originally sailed on a Victorian boating lake called BlackPiill lido, on the sea front at Mumbles.
This site was redevoloped by the council, so we had to move to the current lake which is owned by the council, we share with the local fishing club.
We race International One Metre (IOM) Radio Controlled yachts at Fendrod lake, Swansea, most Sunday afternoons. See events page
The (I0M) yachts are light, responsive and fun to sail. This is the most popular of the four international classes and is sailed at most MYA clubs.
The class rule is ‘closed’ and many aspects of design; materials and construction are restricted in an attempt to promote close competition. However the rule is designed to allow the DIY enthusiast some freedom to construct an inexpensive and competitive boat. The important speed related criteria of length, draught, displacement and sail plan are limited to a maximum of 1000mm, 420mm, minimum displacement weight of 4kg and 3 prescribed rigs.
We welcome newcomers and visiting sailors on a Sunday afternoon, we could lend you a yacht to try after our racing has finished and often have yachts for sale to help beginners to start learning to sail.
Any one can sail from the very young, disabled or able bodied.
The lake is in the Enterprise Park. 5 minutes from M4 junction 45 see location map.
